Zero-emission trucks for our European logistic operations

First hydrogen truck by VDL Groep using Toyota fuel cell modules is ready for pilot phase
13/09/2023
Following our collaboration announcement last May, VDL has just revealed our first fuel cell demo truck. Four more VDL hydrogen trucks will be launched to be tested by our logistic providers, who will use them in route trials for five years starting 2023.

The first of five

Our commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of our logistic operations in Europe has taken a significant step forward with the launch of VDL’s first demo truck using Toyota’s fuel cell module. Within our European logistic operations, this hydrogen demo truck will be key to perform road testing and evaluations of improvements towards the next steps of the project. Moreover, VDL Groep is preparing four more fuel cell trucks, which will be used by our logistic providers: VOS Transport Group, CEVA, Groupe CAT and Yusen.

Contributing to a larger H2 infrastructure across Europe

These companies will greatly contribute to the project by using the hydrogen trucks on their daily logistics routes which pass by Belgium (Antwerp), France (Lille), Germany (Cologne), and the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Rotterdam), with at least one hydrogen refuelling station (HRS) each. We expect not only to consolidate the learnings on how to deploy fuel cell trucks on public roads but also to contribute to Europe’s ecological energy transition, stimulating a further development of an H2 infrastructure across Europe meeting the AFIR requirements and allow for more hydrogen mobility solutions to develop.

One step at a time

At Toyota we target to minimise the environmental impact of our activities, reducing them to zero where possible. This project complements our logistics decarbonisation efforts and supports our long-term goal to become fully carbon neutral by 2040. Beyond the electrification of passenger cars, we see high value in collaborating with multiple partners to accelerate the transition to a sustainable and accessible zero-emission hydrogen economy. Therefore, partnering with companies from all mobility sectors and with different skills enables us to test and provide reliable and efficient solutions.
